As I mentioned, my journey into chronic fatigue was triggered by an episode of sub-acute thyroiditis. It started with a hyperthyroid phase, possibly by an inflamed and an irritated thyroid gland releasing stored thyroid hormone all of a sudden. Excess of thyroid hormones cause hyperthyroidism and lack of enough thyroid hormones cause hypothyroidism.

Thyroid controls metabolic rate of the body through couple of hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) which are controlled by a pituitary hormone called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) through a feedback loop. Thyroid hormones are made from amino acid tyrosine connected to iodine. T3 has three and T4 has four iodine atoms. T4 has half life of about a week and T3 about a day.
